Playworkers Against Racism Tutor Training, Gloucester, 17 & 18 Oct

Aims of the tutor training course:
This two day residential tutor training will support new PAR tutors to fully understand the context, content and delivery of this level 3 SkillsActive endorsed course.

The 2-day tutor training will:
• explore the links between prejudice and racist behaviour
• debate the relevance and benefits of anti-racist work in all play settings, including those in rural communities
• explore how to adopt an anti-racist approach that includes appropriate and inappropriate use of language
• investigate the impact of unearned white privilege
• look at appropriate skills to challenge racism effectively in play settings
• explore how to help playworkers plan for anti-racist practice in their settings.

Applicants need:
• to hold a Further Adult Education Teaching Certificate or equivalent
• to demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the inclusion and equalities practice
• to demonstrate your understanding of the importance of assumptions and values of playwork
• demonstration of a commitment to, and understanding of, equalities issues
• recent equalities training or willing to undertake training
• two years experience of delivering playwork training at level 2

Cost: £350 including accommodation, materials, Quality Assurance visit and report.

Time: 10.30am day one – 3.30pm day two

Alive and Kicking would like to invite you to come and hear author and journalist, Melinda Tankard Reist speak about her latest book DEFIANT BIRTH: Women Who Resist Medical Eugenics.

Speaker: Melinda Tankard Reist

Rosaleen Moriarty-Simmonds who features in Defiant Birth and Dr Karen Palmer whose story was published by the BMJ will also speak about their own experiences.

DEFIANT BIRTH tells the intensely moving and courageous stories of 19 women from around the world who were told they should not have their babies because of perceived disabilities – either in the child or themselves. Facing silent disapproval and sometimes open hostility, from doctors, family members and social expectations, this book chronicles what happened when they went ahead and had their children anyway.
